Attention span is one of the most-quoted topics on the internet and one of the worst-sourced. This page is the opposite: twenty numbers, each from a published study, each linked at the bottom, and each stated the way the study stated it, including the ranges and the places where two studies disagree. How short is the average attention span, really?

The most useful measured number is not a span at all but a switching rate. In Gloria Mark's observation studies at UC Irvine, the average time a person spent on one screen before switching to another fell from about 2.5 minutes in 2004 to roughly 47 seconds in recent years. That is a measurement of behaviour with a phone and a laptop in front of you, not a measurement of the brain's capacity, which is exactly why it is useful: it is the thing that changed.

What does the phone itself do to attention?

Three findings, in increasing order of surprise. About 43 percent of everyday behaviour in a diary study was habitual: repeated in the same place with attention somewhere else, which is the mechanism by which a phone gets picked up before a decision to pick it up has been made. A between-subjects experiment found that watching short-form video, TikTok specifically rather than Twitter or YouTube, measurably degraded prospective memory afterwards, the kind of memory that holds "do this next." And the mere presence of a smartphone on the desk reduced available working memory in a controlled study, even when it was silenced and face-down.

Which phone changes are actually measured to work?

Switching the screen to grayscale cut objectively logged daily use by roughly 38 minutes in one trial and roughly 20 in another, so the honest figure is 20 to 38 minutes a day, not the larger number that gets repeated. Batching notifications to three deliveries a day improved mood and lowered stress and inattention in a randomised field experiment; the same study found switching notifications off entirely backfired, because people checked more, not less. And a one-second pause before opening a distracting app, tested in a PNAS study with the Max Planck Institute, worked mainly by creating a moment of choice: users abandoned about a third of the attempts they had started.

How long does it take to change a habit?

A median of 66 days for a new daily behaviour to become automatic, with a range of 18 to 254 depending on the person and the behaviour, and the finding people forget: missing a single day barely affected the curve. The strongest tool for getting there is an if-then plan, deciding in advance what you will do when a specific cue appears. Across 94 studies, implementation intentions carried an average effect of d = 0.65 on goal attainment, which is a large effect for a technique that takes one sentence to set up.

What does the research say about training attention directly?

Meditation has the evidence. A 2024 meta-analysis pooled 111 randomised controlled trials and found small-to-moderate gains across cognitive domains including attention and executive function, typically after several weeks of regular practice. Brain-training games do not: a comprehensive 2016 review found extensive evidence that people improve at the trained task and little evidence that the improvement transfers to everyday attention, memory or intelligence. The same year, Lumosity paid the US Federal Trade Commission 2 million dollars to settle charges over unsupported claims. The distinction matters because the two are sold with the same words.

How much do sleep, exercise and breaks matter?

More than most attention advice admits. Two weeks of six-hour nights produced neurobehavioural impairment comparable to total sleep deprivation, and the participants rated themselves as only mildly affected. A meta-analysis of short-term sleep loss found it impairs sustained attention and reaction time more than most other cognitive functions. On the other side of the ledger, a 2025 umbrella review of 30 systematic reviews found a single bout of exercise gave small-to-moderate benefits for attention (SMD 0.37) and executive function (SMD 0.36). A 40-second view of a green roof, compared with a bare concrete one, improved performance on the next attention task. And participants given a deliberately boring task generated more creative ideas afterwards than controls, which is the case for boredom rather than a phone in every gap.

Attention residue belongs here too. Switching away from an unfinished task leaves part of your attention stuck on it, degrading performance on whatever comes next, which is the measured cost of the 47-second switching rate above.

Which popular fixes have weaker evidence than their reputation?

Digital detox, for one. A systematic review of detox interventions found mixed results, including cases where a period of abstinence backfired. Reading on paper rather than a screen, for another: a meta-analysis did find a comprehension advantage for paper, but it was small and driven mainly by expository, nonfiction text. Neither is useless. Both are smaller than the way they are usually described.
